About

Dr Riza Batista-Navarro is Senior Lecturer in Text Mining at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Manchester. Riza holds a PhD degree in Computer Science with specialisation in Text Mining. In her work, she focusses on the development of natural language processing methods for information extraction, explainable text classification, machine reading comprehension and language modelling. She has led a number of inter-disciplinary text mining projects, in which she developed computational approaches together with collaborators from various domains such as biomedicine, biodiversity, sustainability and online safety. Her more recently funded projects have focussed on the development of novel text mining methods with applications to the environmental sciences, the legal sector and the creative sector, including a British Council-funded fellowship programme for early-career researchers, an Innovate UK Accelerated Knowledge Transfer project on language models for analysing legal communications, and an AHRC project on using AI to search through community-generated digital content.
